Our Petition for Accessible Education for the visually impaired

One of EconReads’ most important campaigns began with a simple question: How can we make education more accessible for visually impaired students?

In the summer of 2025, we launched a petition calling on the Government of Haryana to strengthen accessibility in education for visually impaired students. Despite the importance of the issue, accessibility in education for visually impaired students often receives limited public attention. We wanted to help bring the issue into a broader public conversation.

Launching the petition was only the beginning. Since then, we have conducted many awareness campaigns to engage students, educators, community members, and others with an interest in accessibility. Through these efforts, the petition has received 5,472 signatures, demonstrating substantial support for stronger accessibility measures.

More importantly, the campaign has helped EconReads move beyond simply raising awareness. The growing support behind the petition has opened doors to conversations with policymakers and public officials, giving us opportunities to bring the experiences and concerns of visually impaired students directly into discussions with people in positions to influence policy.

For us, the petition is not just a number of signatures. Each signature represents someone who chose to support a more accessible education system. The campaign has shown us the power of combining grassroots advocacy, public engagement, and accessible education to draw attention to issues that too often remain overlooked.

We hope to build on this momentum in the future by continuing to engage with students, educators, policymakers, and accessibility advocates—and by turning the voices behind those 5,472 signatures into meaningful conversations about the future of inclusive education.
